We’re holding another themed call for submissions from July 1st to July 15th: “Fragmented.”
This special call for submissions is guest edited by Melissa Reddish. Melissa’s forthcoming Conium Press title, Girl & Flame: A Novella, is full of fragments. Reddish’s sentences are sharp; her chapters read like flashes of fire and smoke; and her characters often find themselves splintered, raw, and emotionally fragmented.
The “Fragmented” theme can be interpreted broadly. Yes, sentence fragments count, but don’t limit yourself to that. Your theme should deal with some form of fragmentation, but the exact context is up to you. Have fun with the concept. Take risks with your story and see how things turn out.
Submissions should be 2,000 words or fewer. Melissa will select one piece for publication as a limited-run micro-chapbook. This micro-chap will be shipped as a free pre-order bonus with Girl & Flame (release date is August 15th). Pre-orders are now available for Souvenirs and Other Stories, by Matt Tompkins! This title is scheduled for release on June 15th, 2016.

Below, you can see a sneak peak of this 6″ x 6″ micro-chapbook (not so “micro” depending on your definition). Caitlin’s story won our 2015 Flash Fiction Contest, judged by Laura Ellen Joyce. It was also recently selected for inclusion in The Best Small Fictions 2016 (forthcoming from Queen’s Ferry Press) by guest editor Stuart Dybek.
This micro-chapbook was produced as a limited-run publication. There are only 50 copies available. Each copy will be signed and numbered. As we continue to ramp up book and chapbook projects, we’re excited to offer a new annual contest with a $1,000 prize plus publication of the winning title! The Conium Press Book & Chapbook Contest opens for submissions on June 1st and closes on September 1st. The contest is open to manuscripts of any length; Conium Press doesn’t get hung up on “publishable” word counts. Chapbooks and full-length books are both considered.
The inaugural judge is Matt Bell, author of Scrapper, Baldur’s Gate II, In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods, Cataclysm Baby, and How They Were Found.
This contest is open to fiction-only, but our definition of fiction includes hybridized writing (as a litmus test, see if you can keep a straight face while claiming that the piece has elements of fiction—yes?—okay, then it’s eligible). Full guidelines are now available here.
