Vol. 5 Collector’s Edition is out now!

The big day is finally here. About two weeks after The Conium Review: Vol. 5 paperback hit shelves, the collector’s edition is ready to go out into the world.

As with previous collector’s editions, the contents are handcrafted with care. Each booklet has been designed to form an aesthetically cohesive collection of stories. The 3″ by 3.25″ booklets are printed with craft paper covers, a parchment title page, and linen inner pages. They are saddle bound and then tied together with natural hemp twine. Finally, there’s a wax seal that keeps the parcel together, and it’s deposited neatly into a little wooden box hand-stamped with archival ink. In total, there are eleven micro-chapbooks (one for each story in the issue) plus a little black booklet that contains copyright info, masthead details, and the table of contents.

In this collection, you’ll find new work from Jessica Roeder, Samantha Duncan, Liz Kellebrew, Kate Gies, Shane Jones, Kathryn Hill, Emily Koon, Jasmine Sawers, Ingrid Jendrzejewski, and Maryse Meijer. A woman falls in love with a giant banana, a tiny goat takes up residence in a woman’s left ventricle, a ghost tour goes awry, and more.

This box set will be shipped to contributors and a few of our bookstore and library partners first. Once those orders have gone out, the remaining copies of the collector’s edition will go up on our website for sale to the general public. This is a limited-run product, and we expect it to sell out. Be sure to check our online store regularly if you’re trying to snag a copy!

Vol. 5 Collector’s Edition Box Set Preview

The Conium Review: Vol. 5 paperback edition officially launched on December 15th. The Vol. 5 collector’s edition is slated for December 30th.

Like the Vol. 3 collector’s edition and the Vol. 4 collector’s edition, we’re loading up a wooden box with individual handmade objects. Each story will be represented as its own micro-chapbook.

This year’s box will actually be more box-ish than previous years (rather than resembling a wooden book). It’s roughly a 3.5-inch cube (not quite a cube — one side is around 4 inches — but close enough). It’s fitted with a metal latch and hinges. This box will be hand-stamped with the title, ISBN, and price.

Over the next few days, will show other pieces of the collector’s edition, leading up to its reveal and sale on December 30th. Stay tuned!

The Conium Review: Vol. 4 Collector’s Edition is here!

The gang’s all here! All nine stories from The Conium Review: Vol. 4 are available as part of this year’s Collector’s Edition. This beautiful box set is now available from our online store. Most orders will ship around December 15th. For a limited period, the Collector’s Edition will be just $30 (marked down from $32) with free shipping! It’s the ultimate holiday gift for the book lover on your list (or for yourself). These sold out rather quickly last year, so don’t miss your chance to claim one today.

The Volume 4 Collector’s Edition Cover

Over the past seven days, we’ve showcased the nine different objects contained in this year’s collector’s edition. From the string-and-button closure on Emily Koon’s “Butterbean” to the accordion-style booklet for Ingrid Jendrzejewski’s “Shampoo,” there are some funky chaps and broadsides in this year’s edition. The Conium Review: Vol. 4 paperback edition launches today, and the collector’s edition goes on sale for a December 15th ship-date.

If you purchase a collector’s edition, all nine stories are wrapped in burlap, tied with twine, stuffed inside a decorative wooden book-shaped box. The box is hand-stamped with acid-free archival grade ink on the front cover, spine, and back cover. The box is hinged along the spine, and the front cover contains a small magnetic closure. This year’s 7.5″ x 10″ box is bigger than last year’s 5.5″ x 7.5″ box (see the last slide below for a comparison), but it’s still designed to fit on most standard bookshelves. Later today, we’ll show off some pics of the fully assembled collector’s edition in all its glory, and it’ll be available for purchase in our online storefront this evening.

Vol. 4 Collector’s Edition Preview: “The People Who Live in the Sears,” by Emily Koon

Emily Koon’s “The People Who Live in the Sears” is the ninth and final item contained inside The Conium Review: Vol. 4 Collector’s Edition. Tomorrow, we’ll show off the book-shaped box that contains these beautiful handmade chapbooks and broadsides. The box is similar to last year’s, but it’s bigger (don’t worry, it still fits on most bookshelves). The entire box set will be available for purchase tomorrow (November 30th). A limited number of these boxes ship right away on the 30th, though most orders will ship closer to December 15th.

Emily’s story was the 2015 Innovative Short Fiction Contest Winner. The contest judge, Amelia Gray, noted that “The People Who Live in the Sears” is ” . . . a little George Saunders, a little Don Barthelme, but best of all a lot of its own thing, the neon Jazzercize glory of the 80s going up like the asbestos-fueled fire it features.”

This 12-page, 4.5″ x 6″ chapbook is printed on 67-lb. vellum paper with a 24-lb. ivory colored inner leaf and 24-lb. white linen pages.
