Kevin Finucane is the 2017 Innovative Short Fiction Contest winner

Stephen Graham Jones has finished deliberating, and he selected Kevin Finucane‘s “I Am Me” as this year’s Innovative Short Fiction Contest winner!

Kevin Finucane was awarded a bronze Solas Award by Travelers’ Tales in creative nonfiction in 2009 and was named a finalist for the Faulkner-Wisdom Competition in the novella category for 2010.

This year’s finalists were Andrew Campell, J. L. Montavon, Sarah Scarr, and Stephanie Wang. Honorable mention goes to Emily Grelle, Jen Knox, and Z. G. Watkins. Here’s what Stephen Graham Jones had to say about Kevin Finucane’s winning story:

“Life moves pretty fast in the here and now, and ‘I Am Me’ gets it on the page with enough terror and comedy and longing that we can’t help but see ourselves there. It’s a scary, twisted reflection, but it’s a lot more helpful than the nice easy lies we usually get told.”

Kevin’s winning story will be published in The Conium Review: Vol. 6, due out later this year from Conium Press. He will also receive $500, five copies of the issue, and a copy of Stephen Graham Jone’s latest book.

Contributor Update: 2017 “Best Small Fictions” winners and finalists

The 2017 Best Small Fictions lineup has been announced. We nominated five stories for the anthology. We’re pleased to report that “Gazebo,” by Shane Jones was selected as a finalist. This story originally appeared in The Conium Review: Vol. 5.

Several previous contributors also appear on the list of finalists and winners for stories published in other literary magazines, including Jen Knox (contributor to The Conium Review Vol. 1, No. 1), Ingrid Jendrzejewski (contributor to our website, Vol. 4, and Vol. 5), Philip Sterling (contributor to The Conium Review Online Compendium).

Our 2017 Flash Fiction Contest judge, Rebecca Schiff, has also been selected for the anthology. Additionally, our 2016 Flash Fiction Contest judge, Leesa Cross-Smith, was selected as a finalist.

Contributor News: Jen Knox’s “Don’t Tease the Elephants” Now Available

Dont-Tease-the-Elephants-Front-Cover-260x390Jen Knox‘s (contributor to our first issue) latest short story collection, Don’t Tease the Elephants, is now available as an ebook from Monkey Puzzle Press.

Jen Knox earned her MFA from Bennington College in 2010. She works as a creative writing professor at San Antonio College and copy editor at Frost & Sullivan. Jen mentors for the PEN American Center. She was nonfiction editor for The Bennington Review (2010) and Quiz & Quill (2007); she worked as a fiction reader for Our Stories Literary Journal and now reads submissions for PANK.

Jen’s writing has won the Global Short Story Competition and was chosen for Wigleaf’s 2012 Top 50. Two of her stories have received Finalist status for Glimmer Train competitions and three of her stories have received honorable mention. Her chapbook, The Aquarium, earned finalist status in the Black Lawrence Press’s 2012 Black River Chapbook competition.
